Windshield Tinting Legal Or Not?

We at Solar Solutions Vero Beach Window Tinting often get asked about tinting the windshield of an automobile. It is illegal to tint the entire front windshield of your automobile. The only way to legally put window film on your entire windshield is to get a medical exemption. Here is the Florida Statute regarding windshield tinting:

316.2952 Windshields; requirements; restrictions.–
A person shall not operate any motor vehicle on any public highway, road, or street with any sign, sun screening material, product, or covering attached to, or located in or upon, the windshield, except the following:

Sun screening material along a strip at the top of the windshield, so long as such material is transparent and does not encroach upon the driver’s direct forward viewing area as more particularly described and defined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 205 as the AS/1 portion of the windshield.

There are no exceptions to this statute other than medical! Unfortunately some customers are being led to believe there are exceptions. Such as if the film has a visible light transmission of 70%, 80% or 90% it is allowed. This is completely false and untrue. Window tinting of any darkness below the AS1 portion of the windshield is illegal and against the law.

If you are being told different you are most likely the victim of an “upsell”, or a business who is not knowledgeable about their field and is not reputable. If you have questions regarding Florida’s laws on window tinting you can refer to the International Window Film Association.
