If your window film is extremely dark, it can draw the attention of police to your car. There is a maximum level of darkness your car windows can legally be tinted, and if your vehicle’s window film is too dark you could receive a ticket. If police officers have reason to believe your windows are too dark or that you are engaging in any suspicious activities, they can and will pull you over.
Window tint can draw negative attention to you and your vehicle if the window film does not meet the laws within your state. Because dark window film makes it difficult for police officers to see inside of your vehicle, this can make them think you might be doing something suspicious and possibly dangerous. According to Florida Highway Patrol’s laws if a police officer cannot see into your vehicle, the officer can pull you over to make sure you are not concealing a weapon, drugs or alcohol. Dark window tint can also make it difficult for drivers to see out of their own windows at night.
A police officer’s job is to investigate any illegal or potentially illegal activities. Some officers will ask you for your driver’s license and hold it up against the inside of your window if you get pulled over. If they can’t read the letters on your driver’s license they may try to tell you your window tint is too dark, but this is not an official measurement of your window tint.
To remedy this, police are starting to use an official window tint meter device when they pull someone over to see if their window tint is too dark and doesn’t meet the standards of Florida’s Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). Keep in mind that your window film must have non-reflective tint only along the top of the windshield. The front side windows are required to allow more than 28% of light in, while the back side and rear windows are required to allow more than 15% of light in. These laws vary from state to state.
