3 Myths About the Sun

We all know that when a car’s windows are tinted, it blocks out some of the notorious Florida heat, making our commute more bearable. Most people are also aware that window film helps block out the sun’s UV rays, which can cause skin cancer, age spots, and wreak havoc on our skin. But what if it’s cloudy, are we safe from the sun’s heat and UV rays then? And how much does window tint really protect us from the sun anyways? What’s the truth and what’s a myth?

Myth 1: When it’s cloudy we are safe from the sun.

Truth: Even when it is cloudy out, about 80% of the sun’s UV rays pass through the clouds. So, when you’re driving around in overcast conditions don’t be fooled…those worrisome UV rays are still penetrating the glass windows in your vehicle.

Myth 2: Tinted window film doesn’t do much good protecting against UV rays.

Truth: Automotive window tint can block up to 99% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Not only does this protect the driver and passengers, it also protects the interior of the car, keeping the leather and other fabric from fading or cracking.

Myth 3: Glass filters out the sun, so tinting is not really necessary.

Truth: While glass does filter out UVB rays, it does not filter out UVA rays. This is because UVA rays penetrate deeper than UVB rays, so while the glass of your windshield and windows does provide a barrier against the sun, UVA rays can still get in. UVA rays are responsible for many skin conditions including melanoma, wrinkles, and other types of skin damage.

The easiest way to protect your skin against the sun while driving is to have high-quality window tint applied to your windows. It’s important to take measures to prevent skin cancer and other side effects from UV rays, but applying sunscreen every time you get behind the wheel during the day gets old quickly.
