Fourth of July – Less than a Month from All the Fun!

Summer is in full swing.  The kids are out of school.  Swimming pools are being “cannonballed.”  Love bugs are everywhere!  June brings with it the promise of months of warmth and the fun that only summertime can bring.  The one summer holiday that most kids and adults alike look forward to is Independence Day, the Fourth of July, with its fireworks, swimming, and backyard BBQ’s.  It brings together family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate our country’s independence.

Of course, our independence was won well over 200 years ago!  That’s a really long time!  To say anyone that experienced the fight for our independence is no longer around is a vast understatement.  So, as the holiday approaches let’s give ourselves a little reminder of what we are celebrating, then look at our area’s fun ways to celebrate.

The Revolutionary War was fought from 1775 to 1783 as Great Britain’s thirteen North American colonies fought again Britain to gain their own independence. The French entered the conflict on our side, helping to secure the British surrender in 1781, although fighting did not formally end until 1783.

In total, over 78,000 soldiers from both sides died during the War, some from battle and even more from disease.  78,000 lives is an incredible price that was paid for our freedom, a freedom which many countries still do not enjoy.  We are not ruled by a dictator or a despot but have a say in who becomes our leader.  This alone is unheard of in many countries.  So, before setting out on all the fun to be had, let’s just take a moment to remember that over 200 years ago our freedom was bought at a price and it is still maintained today, at a price, thanks to our men and women who proudly serve in our armed forces.

Now, let’s take a look at how we can celebrate their sacrifice and our freedom.  What does our beautiful area have to offer this Independence Day?  For those of you that live in the Vero Beach and Sebastian area, there is the 4th of July Sebastian Freedom Festival & Fireworks.  Beginning at 8:30 am there will be a parade from the Sebastian Community Center to Riverview Park.  There will be festivities at the park all day including food, crafts, music, and vendors ending with fireworks over the water at dusk.  It’s hard to top that!

For the residents of Fort Pierce, FL, you can enjoy Stars Over St. Lucie 4th of July Celebration.  It is taking place at Marina Square from 6-9:30 pm where they will be having food, music, vendors, and children’s activities, including face painting.  If you come a bit earlier, beginning at 5:00 and going until 9:30 you can partake in the Chow Down Food Trucks at River Walk Center.  Then, enjoy fireworks over the water!

If you live in the Melbourne area, fireworks will begin at 9 pm over the Indian River Lagoon.  A free shuttle service is being offered from Melbourne Auditorium to Front Street Park for fireworks viewing.  But, before the fireworks fun, you may want to join in the Firecracker 5K at 7 am wearing your most patriotic attire, followed by the Honor America parade.

In Palm Bay, the celebration begins at 4 pm at the Eastern Florida State College campus.  It includes live music, food, a kids’ play area, and fireworks beginning at 9 pm.  Don’t miss out!
