What Belongs in Our Green Yard Waste Bins?

It can get confusing – the trash bin, the yard waste bin which may look the same as the trash bin, and the recycle bin.  What goes where is something that we all get mixed up at some point.  Today we are going to focus on our green yard waste bins.

These bins are not to include bags of any kind.  All yard waste is to be dumped into the bin, bagless.  Such yard waste would include things like grass clippings, palm fronds (of which we have plenty here in Florida!), and cuttings from bushes and trees as a result of trimming them.  This may seem basic to you, but it is easier to get confused than you might think, particularly if someone has moved here from another county or state that did things differently.

Along with not putting bags in the yard waste bin, there are other things that often end up in there that should not be there, such as animal waste.  Indeed, upon returning from your walk with Fido, your plastic bag of puppy poopie does NOT go in the yard waste bin.  That stinky little bag gets the honor of going into your regular trash bin.  You might think it’s acceptable to pick up Fido’s poop from the yard with a shovel and toss it into the yard waste bin since it isn’t in a bag.  Nope!  No poopie in the yard waste bin, please!

Items such as tree branches are supposed to be cut down to four feet in length or smaller.  Your bins are not supposed to exceed fifty pounds in weight.  So, if you have recently cut down a tree, chances are the trunk sections of the tree, even if cut down to four feet in length or less, are still going to be quite heavy.  In this case, you can either put a chunk of the trunk in the bin each week until is completely disposed of, or you can put the remnants of your tree in a curbside pile for a separate pick-up.

These bins are not compost bins and should not include food items.  Those are to be placed in your trash bin.  Additionally, items like fence posts, although initially made from a tree (wood), are considered trash and should not be placed in the yard waste bin either.
