Should I Choose Low-E Windows or Window Tint?

This is a great question.  First, let’s explain what a “low-e” window is. Low-e means low emissivity.  Emissivity has to do with the amount of energy radiated from the window.  The lower the emissivity, the more insulated the window is or the better it keeps heat out of your home.

The purpose of low-e windows is to keep the intrusion of heat and ultraviolet (UV) rays into your home to a minimum.  You definitely want that, but low-e windows are not the only way to obtain it, nor do they block out 100% of either the heat or the UV rays.  Window tint is also designed for this purpose.  So, how do you decide between the two?

There is a massive price difference between replacing the windows in your home and having them tinted.  Are you in need of new windows?  Are the seals on your windows old and cracked?  Do you feel air seeping in around the edges of the windows?  Are the windows hot or cold to the touch depending on the weather?  Do you have old, single-pane windows that are not energy efficient?  All of these questions are factors to consider when deciding if you want to replace the windows of your home.  To give you an idea, it will cost approximately $1000 per window (labor included) to replace your windows.  This can vary based on where you live, who you hire (large or small company), and what type of windows you choose.

If you need new windows and DO choose low-e windows, you can still choose to have them tinted as it will only increase the heat repulsion and UV ray blockage.  If you are not actually in need of new windows, then we highly recommend choosing window tinting over window replacement.  Not only is it much more affordable, but it also will give you many of the same benefits.  Also, if you need new windows but can’t afford them, window tinting can be a great alternative for you.

Window tinting comes in a variety of shades including clear tint, in case you don’t want to change the look of your home.  Window tinting will also give you the benefit of lowering your energy bill as do the low-e windows. Additionally, a typical home (approximately 2000 square feet or smaller) can be completed in one day!  It is much less messy than the dust and mess caused by window replacement, as well as faster!
